    ORGANIZATION

NTU's Computer and Information Networking Center was originally named the Center of Electronic Computing. Established in 1963, it was run and managed by the Department of Electrical Engineering in its early years. In 1975, the center was reassigned to the College of Engineering. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, in 1986 the center became a first-tier organization, directly under the supervision of the university president. In December of 1995, the center was given its current name. It is known as C&INC for short.

The C&INC hosts the e-university center, a computing center, the university’s information center, and its networking center. It is comprised of six divisions: the administrative office, the system design division, the e-learning division, the information management division, the network management division, and the medical informatics division. These divisions provide innovative, safe, convenient, and high-quality computing and networking environments for the NTU community with the goal of upgrading the quality of teaching, research, and service.

    Overview of the Center's Divisions

    • Administration Office:
This office is in charge of the administrative affairs of the center, including personnel affairs, accounting, official document delivery, making purchases, construction and repair, general services, and telephone applications for the school.
    • System Design Division:
This division is responsible for developing and maintaining various information systems, including the campus administrative information systems. It assists in the digitalization of all university administrative matters, and integrates information management systems including payrolls, personnel, student affairs, accounting, general affairs, property management, and special department requests. The goal is to establish a unified administrative information system in order to provide campus-wide information services. The myNTU portal is also managed by the systems design division. This portal integrates all campus services into a single platform. By using the single sign-on into an NTU account, users are able to conveniently access all university information services. The division is also responsible for iNTU mobile campus information services, with the strategy of mobilizing campus in phases. There are already apps for directory, calendar, map. Development and maintenance of the NTU e-paper, NTU blogs, e-learning sites, and other online services also fall under the role of this division
    • E-Learning Division:
This division aims to provide NTU faculty and students with comprehensive services for teaching, learning, and administrative support. These services include a distance learning program and an information technology training program.
The technology training program offers a series of courses on word processing, multimedia animation, web design, video imaging, teaching technologies program design, operating systems, database management, statistical software, information networks, and high-performance algorithms. The classes are open to the entire university community. Distance learning support includes maintenance on teaching and network system equipment.
    • Information Management Division:
This division is responsible for the planning, set up, hosting, and management of the administrative computing systems and information services within the university. It aims to provide a secure, stable, and highly efficient cloud computing environment, so as to support various kinds of research, teaching, and administrative duties. The scope of the division’s responsibilities includes: (1) The single sign-on accreditation platform, which allows users to only use one password to access different systems at NTU. (2) Campus-licensed software, which gives the NTU community the opportunity to purchase and download legal, licensed software and operating systems. (3) E-mail with message forwarding. This includes the release of the next generation NTU Mail 2.0 service to provide a stable, secure, large, and mobile e-mail service. (4) NTU Cloud, which includes the rentable virtual machine (NTU VM), personal mobile online storage (NTU Space), and the online software and computing platform (Softbank). (5) High performance computing services. (6) Personal homepage and department websites. (7) 24-hour operational computer classrooms with other multimedia services and technical support. (8) Management and maintenance of the machinery and servers. (9) Consulting services.
    • Network Management Division:
This division is responsible for planning, deploying, managing, and maintaining: (1) The NTU wireless network, which offers high-speed and advanced wireless security. Features include 802.1x, 802.11i, and 802.11n standards. (2) SSL VPN Service, which offers users an easy way to access campus network resources, such as electronic journals, from off-campus. (3) IP telephone service, which combines a traditional telephone with VoIP capabilities, extending phone service beyond campus, so users can receive and dial campus calls from anywhere for free. (4) NTU ADSL-to-the-home, which extends the NTU campus network to the homes of our faculty, staff, and students. (5) The NTU campus bandwidth backbone of 20Gbps. Each dormitory resident has a 100 Mbps connection. (6) Information, system, and network security defense, including building intrusion detection and prevention systems for website security monitoring, enhanced e-mail security, and zombie computer detection mechanisms. It also provides staff and students with up-to-date web security information. (7) Domain names, web proxy and streaming caching services (8) Inquiries, network-related problems, and technical support.
    • Medical Informatics Division:
This division is responsible for the maintenance of the NTU-MC campus network, as well as user consultation and technical support for the teaching and research of medical informatics. It is the Computer and Information Networking Center’s contact on the medical campus.

    Prospects for the Future

With the advent of the mobile cloud computing, we will continue to work towards a mobile school administration, providing a safe and convenient information and communication environment. We seek to support NTU teachers in the classroom, and integrate and improve the efficiency of research and learning by providing teachers and students easy access the computing anytime and anywhere through their mobile devices. Our target is to construct a first-class network to enhance the international competitiveness of NTU.
To best support teachers and students, information and communication must play an active and positive role in the NTU of the future. We will also continue to purchase valuable software to be used for teaching and research. In the spirit of sharing resources, we will strive to provide a diverse and high-performance common computing environment. Our network infrastructure will continue to go through comprehensive upgrades. Fast and easy broadband will also be provided. All these actions are an attempt to create a ubiquitous hi-tech electronic campus: i-NTU.
